Linz Overview
Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and is the third largest city of Austria; it is also the biggest port on the Danube.

Linz has a long history, dating back to the Roman era, today it is one of the leading cultural centres of Austria, its most famous son is the composer Anton Bruckner.

The beautiful landscape and cultural heritage, coupled with the friendly locals make Linz a popular holiday destination.

Linz Essentials
Alter Dom,/b> - This is the largest baroque church in Linz, and was built by the Jesuits at the end of the 17th century. The interior of the church has pink marble columns; and intricately carved pulpit; and many statues. This is a sight not to be missed.

Landhaus - This is one of the most important historic buildings in Linz and is today the headquarters for Upper Austria's government. The Landhaus was built in around 1570 and has a beautiful courtyard, which surrounds a central fountain.

Linz Castle - The castle sits high above the river to the west of Hauptplatz, and it was used by Emperor Friedrich III from 1486 - 1489. The castle houses the Provincial Museum of Upper Austria, which exhibits the rich history of the entire region.

St Martin's Church - This church is the best example of Carolingian architecture in Upper Austria and it is also the oldest church in Austria in its original form. The church was built during the 700s and it is filled with baroque art and sculotures.

,b>Church of the Minorite Brothers
- The church was built in early Gothic style during the 1200s, with the interior receiving a baroque overlay in 1758. The church's main attraction is the high altar by Bartolomeo Altomonte.

Linz Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events
Pflasterspektakel (22-24 July) - This annual festival is one of the most popular events of the year in Linz. Over 500 street artis from all over Europe come together for this amazing festival of magic; mime; acrobatics; and other unbelievable feats of skill.

Ars Electronica Festival (early September) - This annual week long festival turns Linz into the most futuristic city in the world. Ars Electronica create a fusion of art and science, with a trade show; a international forum; and an art exhibition.
